Saturday 19th November marks the anniversary of the death of the landscape artist Sam Bough who painted the Scottish Volunteer Review which was held in the Queen's Park in 1860.
Sam was a gunner in the Artist’s Company, Edinburgh Volunteer Artillery for a short time.
The artist painted the original hanging sign for his local pub the ‘Volunteer Arms’ which stands at the corner of Jordan Lane and Morningside Road.
When Sam who was a close friend of Robert Louis Stevenson died in 1878, he was buried in the Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh.
