1772 - Captain Cook R.N.

Longitude had to calculated with 100% accuracy as the slightest error could result in ships ending up miles off course. Captain Cook takes a chronometer based on John Harrison's design when he sets off on his second Pacific voyage.
H.M.S. Resolution

Originally designed to carry coal, H.M.S. Resolution was fitted with the most up to date navigational equipment for the voyage. She was also fitted with twelve light 6 pounders and twelve swivel guns. Illustration by John Thomson.
