Tuesday 7th June

First firing

Tuesday 7th June marks the 150th anniversary of the first official firing of the One o’ Clock Gun.

The time-gun had failed to fire on the previous two days due to a faulty friction-tube and the failure of the electric clock designed to fire the gun to function. The time-gun fired bang on time on the third day much to the relief of John Hewat who had proposed that an audible time signal be set up to back up the time-ball on the Nelson Monument.

RSM Craig Roxby of 105th Regt RA (V) will be playing the part of Chief Master Gunner Findlay the n.c.o. in charge of the gunners.

Although the order of dress the gunners were wearing during the first official firing is not known,  RSM Roxby and his team will be wearing full dress tunics and pillbox hats. Captain Del Tickner the Regiment's Quartermaster has reconstructed the electric clock designed to fire the time-gun.

The illustration by John Thomson a founder member of the One o' Clock Gun & Time Ball Association shows the gunners dressed in shell jackets.

The Royal Regiment of Scotland will be supplying a guard detail for the historic event on Saturday.
