Gunner David Henderson
This week’s photograph shows former Gunner David Henderson standing beside the Dundee time-gun.
The time-gun was set up in the Barrack Square in 1872. At one o’ clock a spark from the electric wire ignited the composition packed in the friction-tube setting off the charge.
The time was sent from the observatory on the Calton Hill, Edinburgh via the telegraph system. The gun which had been captured from the Russians during the Crimean War was maintained by the Forfarshire Artillery Volunteers.
It’s hoped that the time-gun will be moved in the not too distant future from it’s present position to a site next to Dundee's top tourist attraction H.M.S. Unicorn so that it can be fired on special occasions. www.frigateunicorn.org
RSM Roxby's Time Ball Challenge Team raised £4,000 for Firepower during the gunners’ epic cycle ride from Artillery House, Colinton to London.
