The Association has been invited

Time GunThe Association has been invited by Ian Anderson, managing director of James Ritchie & Son (Watch & Clockmakers) to set up an exhibition on the city’s time system at the firm’s premises at 35a Dundas Street.

The engraving shows the time clock which was presented to the city by the world famous clockmaking firm. The weight in the clock dropped at one when a signal was sent over an electric wire from the observatory on the Calton Hill, firing the gun.

As the wire which was over 4,000 feet long kept breaking, it was attached to the buildings in 1873 when the One o' Clock Gun was under the supervision of Chief Master Gunner Charles Adolphus Barr.

The Association’s ‘Colour Sergeant Scott & Greyfriars Bobby’ exhibition will be opened by Iain Gray MSP at Prestonpans Library, East Lothian on Saturday 24th April at 10.30 am. We’d be glad to see you if you’re in the area.

Forbes Macgregor identified the figure on the left as Colour Sergeant Scott in his book ‘Greyfriars Bobby The Real Story at Last’ and the dog as Greyfriars Bobby.

Although the tunic has four stripes, a colour sergeant would not be carrying a cavalry pattern sword or wearing a tunic with epaulettes.
