Cameron’s Penny Guides
Cameron’s Penny Guides could be purchased at railway bookstalls and newsagents.
In Cameron’s guide to Edinburgh Castle for 1892, the section on the Half Moon Battery states: ‘The guns by which it is fortified are only 18 pounders, and they are used for firing Royal and other salutes.
The gun to the right of the small box containing the clock is the time-gun, fired at one o’ clock daily, much to the disgust of nervous old ladies, as the sound in Princes Street is rather startling’.
In the 1890’s the One o’ Clock Gun was maintained by Sergeant Richard Roberts. The publication's cover is reproduced courtesy of Sergeant Shannon, Edinburgh Castle's District Gunner.
Two separate meetings were held last week to discuss the plans for the 150th anniversary of the One o’ Clock Gun next year with Susan Lanham the City Council’s events officer and Jennifer Roxburgh our contact at Historic Scotland.
Our ‘Colour Sergeant Scott & Greyfriars Bobby’ exhibition will open at Prestonpans Library on Saturday 24th April at 10.30 am. If you can make it we’d be glad to see you. Blue our mascot is polishing up his cannon.
