Jim Pritchitt

Jim PritchittThis week’s photograph shows Jim Pritchitt a direct descendant of Chief Master Gunner Findlay with Greg Bond, a National Parks & Wildlife guide who fires the Sydney one o’clock gun.

The shot was taken on 4th September just after the time-gun had been fired. Pinchgut  Island is now run by National Parks & Wildlife who are responsible for maintaining the historic time-gun.

Jim’s daughter Claudia and her fiance paid a flying visit to Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago. We hope to see them at the ceremony to mark the 150th anniversary of the death of Chief Master Gunner Findlay in July.

The Royal Observatory Edinburgh is open to the public on Saturday 24th & Sunday 25th September. Admission is free and no booking is necessary. Check out www.roe.ac.uk.

The observatory’s master clock supplied the time to the One o’ Clock Gun and the Nelson Monument time-ball from 1896 until the 1970s. The City Observatory on the Calton Hill is also open to the public on Saturday 24th September so don’t miss the opportunity to visit this unique building which supplied the time to the One o’Clock Gun for thirty five years.
