Richard Maudslay the great, great grandson

Richard MaudslayRichard Maudslay the great, great grandson of the founder of Maudslay, Sons & Field dropped the Nelson Monument time ball last Saturday.

As Richard dropped the time ball, the One o’ Clock Gun fired from the Castle and an RAF fighter roared over the Nelson Monument

Roger Kinns of the Maudslay Society gave a first class run down on the time balls and lifting machinery manufactured by the company to the trustees of the Maudslay Society at the headquarters of Edinburgh World Heritage before the time ball drop.

Roger’s fascinating talk was preceded by an introduction by Dorothy Marsh the Keeper of Conservation for the City of Edinburgh on the building of the Nelson Monument and followed by a talk by Andrew Laing of Laing’s Foundry on the renovation of the lifting machinery and the time ball carried out by his company.

The photograph showing Richard Maudslay waiting for Sergeant Shannon to fire the time gun was taken by Roger Kinns.
