Palacio da Pena at Sintra

Palacio da Pena at SintraThis week’s photograph taken by Edinburgh Castle steward Graeme Magee shows the time-gun and sundial which stand on the Queen’s Terrace in the Palacio da Pena at Sintra, Portugal.

The sun dial automatically activated a mechanism which fired the time-gun at midday.

The palace was built as a summer residence by King Ferdinand II.  Building began in 1842 after the monarch had acquired an area of land containing an old monastery and a Moorish castle.

The Royal Naval Reserve Service of Remembrance will take place on board H.M. Frigate Unicorn, Dundee at 15.00 on Sunday, 13th November.

The service is open to all. Dress day uniform with medals or a lounge suit or equivalent should be worn.
