The 3rd Rifles

3rd RiflesThe 3rd Rifles, a company of the 4th Rifles and B Company of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland marched from Johnston Terrace down the Royal Mile to Holyroodhouse on Saturday 8th May to mark their return from a six-month tour of duty in Afghanistan.

As the riflemen marched passed the City Chambers at rifle pace, the salute was taken by the regiment’s Colonel-in-Chief H.R.H. Princess Alexandra.

Thirty riflemen of the battalion have been killed on active service in the Sangin area of Helmand Province. Campaign medals were presented at a parade at Redford Barracks following the march through the city.

The light infantry regiment which recruits in Yorkshire and the North East of England has been stationed at Redford Barracks since 2003.

A bugler from the battalion played the ‘Last Post’ at the ceremony to unveil Chief Master Gunner Findlay’s headstone in St. Cuthberts graveyard in 2006.
