Admiral Wauchope R.N.

Admiral Wauchope R.N.

Captain Wauchope R.N. of Niddrie, Midlothian invented the time ball in 1819. It took ten years before his invention was accepted by the Admiralty. Following the time ball's successful trial at Portsmouth the naval officer submitted his idea to the French and U.S. embassies in London. Photograph courtesy of the National Library of Scotland.
