History

The One o’Clock Gun & Time Ball Association was founded in 1998 and established a three-month long exhibition at Edinburgh Castle as part of the Millennium celebrations in 2000. Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the offer of a site by Historic Scotland, the exhibition is now a permanent fixture within the Castle, located at the Mills Mount Battery.
We have also produced an interesting booklet ‘The Story of Edinburgh’s Time Service’ giving more information on Edinburgh’s time service.

We have produced an informative History Of The Gun in pictures. Use the menu bar at the top of this page to navigate through the sections.

You can also view a selection of images from around the globe in our World History of Time Guns & Time Balls section. The Association welcomes new members. The present list of Committee Members can be found here.
